The Asian tractors are coming or maybe you feel they have already arrived. Some of the most stylish tractors I've seen are built by Tym-America. I don't have a clue as to how durable the tractors are but they sure are nice to look at. The tale of U.S. tractor manufacturers is sad and one of generally not being able to compete. It seems the remaining U.S. manufacturers are running for cover with the Case-New Holland merger being the last consolidation that I'm aware of. The history of the Ford demise can be found here. John Deere has survived fairly well but many of it's small tractors are built in Asia. Parts for mid-size Deere tractors are often manufactured off shore and then assembled in places like Rome, Georgia. The history of the Deere Corp. can be found here. The Caterpillar Challenger line was recently purchased by Agco and so things continue. One really needs a score card to keep track of who owns and sells what. Then there are the third party players like Mitsubishi that manufacture re-branded engines for companies like Caterpillar, Tym etc. The replacement parts situation has to be a major challenge in these times.
Vehicles - Things aren't much different on the vehicle side. The latest nationally published (2006) reliability data for vehicles pretty much excluded U.S. designed and manufactured vehicles with the Asians again leading the pack. The history of the GM, Subaru, Isuzu relationship can be found here. This page focuses on Subaru because of the large numbers of Subies found in rural Colorado. Subaru also has outstanding on-line sources for repair/maintenance information. Most OEM parts for Subaru's can be obtained from Internet sources. Many Subaru dealer organizations, however, seem to have a bad reputation.
Information Resources - The cost of both tractors and vehicles are quite high and getting higher. It's important to purchase equipment that is both highly reliable and that you can find repair information and parts for. With a little effort and research, sources such as Automotive Re-builders can be used to find out what designs/manufacturers are having major problems.
The Future - Unfortunately, all of the above depends on a single resource to operate. The U.S. still consumes fully 25% of the world oil production but only produces between 8 - 12% depending on who's figures you care to believe. Adequate energy seems to be an on-going and major challenge for the U.S. Proposals to develop deep water fields in the Gulf and elsewhere should be seen for the desperate acts that they really are. Recent proposals to drill above the Arctic Circle will require massive rigs capable of dealing with arctic ice issues. All of this, in my view, translates into higher cost and less reliable petroleum supplies. The Green Car Congress site is a typical site you can monitor for the changes in energy related technologies that must occur if we are to meet future energy needs. Without a number of badly needed technology breakthroughs, we may all end up back with horse and plow style solutions. |
