What is a "Western Slope"?
image
The US Continental Divide
The United States sits between two oceans namely the Atlantic ocean to the east and the Pacific ocean to the west. Running north to south down through the nation is a "Continental Divide". A large portion of the Continental Divide is defined by major mountain ranges. Precipitation falling east of the Continental Divide (Eastern Slope) ultimately flows into the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Precipitation falling to the west (Western Slope), ends up flowing into the Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of California. This website was physically created from a location in Western Colorado not far from the eastern border of Utah. The main server for this site is currently located in central Utah. The surrounding area in Colorado is largely rural farm land mixed in with large operations devoted to the extraction of fossil energy. Up the road are major coal mines dedicated to mining coal for steam power plants. Just over the hill are reported deposits of natural gas exceeding 10 trillion cubic feet in volume. In spite of this energy wealth, most inhabitants here live a life of limited means. In all directions are areas of exceptional world-class scenery. The area is also known for it's many wildlife virtues. I feel privileged to live here.
Site Focus -
The world is changing rapidly. Energy, climate change, politics, finance and health care are but a few of the many areas either in crisis mode or undergoing significant and rapid change. This site attempts to be a knowledge aggregator for the many issues facing this nation. Others have recently said that the future indeed looks grim. The author of this sites believes that knowledge and wisdom together with the technology means to acquire both will go a long way towards blunting any impacts from world craziness.
Site Software -
Totally lacking from this site is the use of Java or scripting in any form including Javascript. Both are well known contributors to the infection of Windows based PC's with malicious code. The same is NOT true of the hundreds of links referenced on this site. All coding and graphic manipulation on this site has been performed by hand using the Linux operating system and related applications. To view the many problems associated with the Windows® operating system and scripting exploits in general, go to my Windows® page. Information technology is critical to the efficient daily performance of all type of tasks. The time has long since passed for web page coding and common file types to be standardized on a world wide basis. This site fully subscribes to the concept of "Open Source". It should also be noted that all of the software required to create and operate this site is available to anyone at no cost. Server hosting in the U.S. costs as little as $7.00 per month. Server hosting in India costs only slightly more than $11.00 per year. This is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to learn how to build web pages and present knowledge to the public.
DjVu Document Resources -
One of the many exciting advantages of Linux is the support for DjVu documents. This file format, because of it's open non-proprietary structure, has found favor with increasing numbers of educational and governmental organizations not to mention numerous private companies. Additional information and links to DjVu resources can be found on my Linux webpage.
Browsers -
Breaking News, April 26, 2009 - It appear that Internet Explorer Ver. 8 is having major problems. As always, this site does not recommend the use of any Microsoft software. Breaking News, August 2009 -web citizens including Microsoft® are pleading with the public to stop using the awful IE6 browser. As stated above, we don't recommend the use of any Microsoft® products.

By now, many people are doing their banking and bill paying on-line. No one should be using Internet Explorer® or Windows® for these functions. The reason for this is plainly referenced in the above section. Both the Firefox browser and the Opera browser strive to meet world web page coding standards. Be advised that such standards are in a nearly constant state of change and upgrade. To test the compatibility of your browser against the latest world standards, go to the Acid3 test site. This is a fairly tough test and is not a requirement to view pages on this site. It does show what will be needed in the not too distant future..
