The shear size of the Federal Government makes it tough to keep up even with a few issues one might be interested in. For the individual, the presentations by the Comptroller General might be the most important. Congress, this year (2006), is somewhat famous for the lack of progress on virtually all issues important to the voting public. David Walker has a sobering message for those younger voters who have not yet achieved the status of very wealthy. It's my sincere hope that the financial shortcoming soon to impact the U.S. will not bury current day retirees.
Public Input - It should come as no surprise that the individual citizen has very little impact on the monstrous Federal Government. With all of the special interest groups and lobbiests competing for the attention of senators and representatives, the individual citizen has little impact. Only through large letter writing campaigns or citizen grass root organizations do the representatives take notice. It really makes little difference if one agrees with the direction of the Federal Government. If one can predict, through research, the direction of the government, one might then have an opportunity to minimize any resulting impact of such movements on a personal scale. The needs and wants of rural dwellers are often quite different from urban dwellers. The checks and balances built into the government process is suppose to, in theory, balance out such effects. Unfortunately, the large influence of urban dwellers sometimes swamps any influence from rural districts.
